A true lover of northern regions, Steve Kaufman moved to Alaska in the mid 1970's and launched a career in photography a few years later. In the past twenty years, Steve has traveled widely, photographing natural history throughout Alaska and North America as well as 13 other countries. A fascination for harsh environments and the ability of plants and animals to survive extreme conditions has shaped the files considerably, with subjects spanning the globe from arctic Alaska to the Judean desert of Israel.
In 1981, he moved to Homer, a small fishing village on the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula, and built his own home.
National Geographic gave Steve an assignment to photograph the National Wildlife Refuges in Alaska for a book, "Wildlands for Wildlife" in the summer of 1983. During the next three years, Steve shot three other NGS book assignments, and four magazine assignments for NGS Traveler.
Kaufman's work has been featured in magazines and books around the world including Audubon, International Wildlife, National Geographic, Smithsonian, Airone, and BBC Wildlife. Steve has combined talents with his father, "Yogi" Kaufman, to produce five coffee table books: "Untamed Alaska" , "Silent Chase, Submarines of the US Navy", "Sharks of Steel", and "City at Sea". The later three represent a brief departure from wildlife photography, as they document life on board submarines (Silent Chase & Sharks of Steel) and aircraft carriers (City at Sea. "Untamed Alaska, Tenth Anniversary Edition" (1997) is the latest book published by Steve & Yogi Kaufman.
