ORCAS IN PATAGONIA

ORCAS IN PATAGONIA

Roberto Bubas, and other rangers of the Province of Chubut, have been conducting a long-term project to study the natural history and genealogy of the orcas of northern Patagonia. The principal goal of the project is to better understand the population status of the species to enable us to produce strategies for their conservation.

The shape of the dorsal fin, along with any nicks and scars, and the pattern of the saddle patch are unique to each animal and permit the identification of those individuals which make a community of orcas.

In adult males, the dorsal fin is tall and (usually) straight. In females and juveniles, the dorsal fin is shorter and sickle-shaped.

"The contined observation of known animals through the years will enable us to know the natural history of the orcas which visit this corner of the planet and their relationship with all other beings which compose the general scheme of life."
